Activities (2026-27) Essay writing competition

An Essay Writing competition was organised by Department of Punjabi of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar on the topic 'Shiv Kumar Batalvi's Contribution to Punjabi Literature'. Around forty students from different classes participated in it. The aim of this competition was to give the students an opportunity to showcase their creative potential and to acquaint them with the life, works and poetic prowess of Shiv Kumar Batalvi. The overarching intent was to bring home the relevance of Batalvi’s notions in the contemporary times. Narayani of B.A. Semester III secured first position. Harpreet Kaur of B.A. Semester III made it to second position and Amandeep Kaur of B.Sc. F.D. Semester I managed it to third position. Apart from this, Consolation Prizes were received by Manveet Kaur and Neha of B.Sc. FD Semester I.

International guest lecture (11/05/26)

The Department of Punjabi organized an International Guest Lecture.  The keynote speaker for the session was Ms. Sukhi Bal (Department of Justice, Australia; Punjabi actress, mountaineer, and athlete).

Ms. Sukhi Bal is an eminent and inspiring personality who holds the unique distinction of being the first Punjabi woman to summit Mount Ama Dablam. On this occasion, she shared her experiences of a challenging 21-day expedition with the students. While motivating the students, she emphasized the importance of active participation in academic as well as literary, cultural, and other creative activities, stating that such engagements play a significant role in the holistic development of students.

PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar holds International Webinar on “British and European Punjabi Literature in the Context of Life”~

The Amrita Pritam Literary Society of Department of Punjabi of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, under the aegis of IQAC, organized an international webinar on the topic “British and European Punjabi Literature in the Context of Life.”

On this occasion, Mr. Balvinder Singh Chahal (Punjabi writer and President, European Punjabi Literary Academy, England) and Mr. Jaspal Singh (social worker, translator, and Chief Advisor, European Punjabi Literary Academy, England) participated as the speakers.

During the webinar, Mr. Balvinder Singh Chahal provided a brief overview of the historical background of Indian Punjabi migration. Speaking about Punjabi literary creations in Britain, he proudly highlighted that migrant Punjabi writers have been continuously contributing to Punjabi literature, especially in genres such as poetry, short stories, and novels. These works intricately portray various aspects of British life. To better understand life in Britain, he recommended reading the works of prominent British Punjabi writers such as Harjeet Atwal, Swaran Chandan, Neel Giri, Davinder Kaur, and many others.

Following this, Mr. Jaspal Singh discussed the interrelationship between literature and history, as well as the role of literature in human life. He also appreciated the writings and literary craftsmanship of prominent Italy-based Punjabi writers dedicated to the Punjabi language, including Malkiat Singh Dhaliwal, Jeet, Amarjit Sidhu, and Sucha Singh.

Dr. Surinder Kaur Narula, former Head of the Punjabi Department at PCM S.D. College for Women, attended the webinar as a special guest. Along with her, faculty members and students from various streams of the college enthusiastically participated in the event.

PCM S. D. College for Women, Jalandhar organized a National Webinar on the topic ' Bharti Giyan Parampara: Punjabi Bhasha ate Sahit de Jhrokhe ton'.

Amrita Pritam Sahit Sabha (Punjabi Department) of PCM S. D. College for Women, Jalandhar organized a National Webinar on the topic 'Bharti Giyan Parampara: Punjabi Bhasha ate Sahit De Jhrokhe ton' under the guidance of IQAC. During this webinar, Dr. Ravinder Singh, Professor, Department of Punjabi, University of Delhi participated as the keynote speaker.  On this occasion, Dr. Ravinder Singh Ji, while defining the Indian knowledge tradition, tried to explain its meaning to the audience in very simple words with various examples and discussed in detail on the concepts of origin of creation, divine consciousness and monism. While discussing religion and philosophy, he said that Punjabi literature and culture have a close relationship with the Indian knowledge tradition and if a person studies the Indian knowledge tradition diligently, it can prove to be moral and beneficial for the entire humanity. Dr. Surinder Kaur Narula, former Head of the Department of Punjabi, PCM SD College for Women and Dr. Navneet Kaur, Assistant Professor, Mata Sundari College, New Delhi specially participated in this webinar. Apart from these, the teachers of the college and students of various streams participated with great enthusiasm.

Poster Making Competition 20/02/26)

PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar  celebrates Mother Tongue’Day

Poster Making Competition on ‘Importance of Mother Tongue’ was organized by Punjabi Department of PCM S.D. College for Women and PCM S.D. Collegiate Senior Secondary School for Girls, Jalandhar. 

31 students from different classes participated in this competition. The objective of this competition was to give students an opportunity to showcase their creative potential and connect them with Punjabi language. 

The judge of this competition was Miss Ashima Chopra (Head, Fine Art Department). In this competition, Narayani of B.A. Semester II secured the first position. Ashu of B.A. B.Ed Semester II secured the second position and Garima of B.Com. Semester VI secured the third position. Apart from this, Aditi of B.Com. Semester IV secured the consolation prize. Almost all the students of class XI of the Collegiate Block participated in this competition in which Bhumika (Commerce) won first place, Gurleen Rana (Non-Medical) won second place, Drishti (Arts) won third place and the consolation prize was won by Ekta (Medical).

PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar Student Secures First Position at ‘Antarrashtriya Kavi Darbar’~

A student of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, brought laurels to the institution by securing First Position at ‘Antarrashtriya Kavi Darbar’ organised by Antarrashtriya Sarb Sanjha Manch, Canada, in collaboration with Ramgarhia Sikh Foundation of Ontario. Jasmine, a student of B.Com Semester IV, participated in the competition under the guidance of the Department of Punjabi and impressed the judges with her poetic excellence. The competition revolved around themes encompassing religion, social issues, current affairs, and the Punjabi mother tongue, providing a rich platform for creative and cultural expression. She was honoured with cash prize and a certificate in recognition of her outstanding performance.

The department encourages students to continue participating in such national and international forums to nurture literary talent and cultural awareness in the future.

A series of activities dedicated to the 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

In accordance with the guidelines issued by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and the Department of Higher Education, the Amrita Pritam Sahit Sabha of the Department of Punjabi, PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, in collaboration with the Guru Nanak Study Centre, organized a series of activities dedicated to the 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.

The first activity in this series was an inter-class quiz competition on the theme “The Life and Philosophy of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.” Students from various classes participated in teams and were asked questions related to Guru Ji’s life, teachings, and philosophy. In this competition, Team B secured the first position, Team A stood second, and Team C achieved the third place.

The second activity was an inter-class essay writing competition on the topic “The Concept of Impermanence in the Bani of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.” Among the participants, Ashu (B.A. B.Ed Semester I) won the first prize, Kirandeep Kaur (B.A. Semester I) secured the second prize, and Ramandeep Kaur (B.A. B.Ed Semester I) won the third prize. Students participated in both activities with great enthusiasm.

Continuing the series, a seminar on ‘The Life and Philosophy of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’ was organized in which Mrs. Praveen Abrol and S. Jatinder Pal Singh graced the occasion as keynote speakers.

The primary objective of these activities was to acquaint students with the life, martyrdom, and ideology of Hind Di Chadar, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. On this occasion, the Principal of the college, Dr. Pooja Parashar, highlighted that Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was the first personality in history who sacrificed his life for the protection of faith and gave the message of humanity, equality, impartiality, and selfless service to mankind.

Guru Nanak Study Centre of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar in collaboration with the Department of Punjabi and Department of History organized a special Guest Lecture on the topic ‘Guru Nanak Bani: Universal Solidarity’ to celebrate the 557th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

On this occasion, Dr. Malkiat Singh (Assistant Professor, Department of Punjabi, Trinity College, Jalandhar) participated as the speaker.

Dr. Malkiat Singh, while addressing the audience, discussed the teachings of Guru Ji in the context of universal solidarity. He adduced that one needs to have a secular perspective when it comes to religion, while humanity is the biggest religion of all.

However, under the influence of social media, religious norms are being violated, ammounting to immorality, therefore, we should all keep our morality intact while reading and worshiping. He held that students be familair with ‘Shabad Gyan’ and should have an inclination to read the text to connect with its inordinate influence. He said that there were such revolutionary Gurus who fought for the social interests and rights of every class and spread the message of love and care for nature. Therefore, it is our moral duty to create a harmonious and just society

Paper Reading Competition 25/9/25

The Department of Punjabi of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar organized a Parcha Paath Competition, in which students participated with great enthusiasm. The purpose of this competition was to connect students with Punjabi culture and to provide them an opportunity to showcase their creative abilities. In this competition, Ramanpreet (B.A. B.Ed Semester I) secured the first position, Guneet Kaur (B.A. B.Ed Semester I) secured the second position and Amarjot Kaur (B.A. B.Ed Semester I) secured the third position. In addition to this, the Consolation Prize was awarded to Palak (B.Sc. Economics Semester I).

PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar Celebrates “Mela Teeyan Da” with Traditional Zeal

The Youth Welfare Department, in collaboration with the Department of Punjabi, organized “Mela Teeyan Da” at PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, to celebrate Punjab’s vibrant traditions and promote cultural awareness.

Principal Prof. (Dr.) Pooja Prashar graced the occasion as Chief Guest and lauded the departments for preserving heritage through such events. Highlights included the lively Kikli competition, a decorated swing evoking Teej’s nostalgic charm, and stalls of mehndi, bangles, nail art, and traditional delicacies, all adding to the festive spirit.

National Webinar on the topic ‘Punjabi Criticism: Historical Perspective’ (12th April, 2025)

The Department of Punjabi at PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar, under the aegis of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized a National Webinar on the topic ‘Punjabi Criticism: Historical Perspective’.

Dr. Naresh Kumar, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Punjabi and Dogri, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala, graced the occasion as the keynote speaker.

During the session, Dr. Naresh Kumar defined literary criticism and shared significant insights into its historical evolution. He deliberated on the various historical phases of criticism and enlightened the students about the theoretical aspects and key elements of different schools of thought in literary criticism.

Furthermore, Dr. Kumar spoke about the contemporary critics of the 21st century and their noteworthy publications, inspiring both students and teachers to explore critical literature in greater depth.

The webinar witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members and students across various streams.

International Webinar on the topic ‘Contribution of Diaspora Punjabi Media in the Development of Punjabi Language’ (20-03-25)

The Department of Punjabi of Prem Chand Markanda S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, under the guidance of IQAC, organized an international webinar on the topic ‘Contribution of Diaspora Punjabi Media in the Development of Punjabi Language.’

The webinar featured Mr. Gurshaminder Singh ‘Mintu Brar’ (Chief Editor of Punjabi Akhbar, Host and Producer of Pendu Australia (a YouTube travel show), and President of the Punjabi Culture Association, South Australia) as the keynote speaker.

During the session, Mintu Brar shared his personal struggles and experiences, highlighting his contributions to the promotion of Punjabi language and media. He compared the phonetics of Punjabi with those of Hindi, English, and other languages, asserting that Punjabi is one of the richest languages. Addressing concerns about the future of Punjabi, he countered the skepticism of language scholars by stating that the number of Punjabi speakers in foreign countries surpasses those speaking English or other foreign languages. He also emphasized that the passion with which Punjabi is spoken abroad suggests that the language will soon secure the third position globally.

Based on his experiences and the role of active Punjabi media, Mintu Brar reassured language enthusiasts about the bright future of Punjabi and dispelled their doubts regarding its sustainability.

Discussion on Punjabi Media (08.03.2025)

A discussion on the theme ‘Punjabi Literature and Media’ was organized by the Amrita Pritam Literary Society of the Punjabi Department and the Department of Mass Communication and Video Production of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, under the guidance of the IQAC. The main objective of this activity was to enlighten students about Punjabi literature and media, and to make them aware of the interconnections between the two. On this occasion, students shared their views on television dramas and films that were based on various literary genres of Punjabi literature, such as novels, short stories, and plays. Students from different streams participated in the activity with great enthusiasm.

Seminar (Punjabi Bhasha Da Bhvikh)(20.02.25)

The Amrita Pritam Sahit Sabha, in collaboration with the Department of Punjabi and the Guru Nanak Study Centre of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, organized a seminar dedicated to International Mother Tongue Day. The theme of the seminar was “The Future of the Punjabi Language.”

The keynote speaker for the seminar was Dr. Satish Kumar Verma, Professor Emeritus (DBU) and former Dean of Languages at Punjabi University, Patiala. Addressing the students, Dr. Verma explained the definition of the mother tongue and its significance in human life. He emphasized that no other medium of communication can match the depth with which an individual can express emotions and thoughts in their native language. He also highlighted the rich phonetic and linguistic heritage of Punjabi, asserting that it is one of the most profound languages in the world.

President Shri Naresh Budhia, Senior Vice President Shri Vinod Dada, other esteemed members of the managing committee, and the worthy Principal Prof. Dr. Pooja Prashar commended the efforts of the Department of Punjabi and the Guru Nanak Study Centre for organizing this insightful event.

The seminar was efficiently hosted by Mrs. Akwinder Kaur, who managed the stage with great finesse. Dr. Anju Bala, Dr. Simarjit Kaur, and faculty members from various departments were also present, contributing to the success of the event with their valuable insights and participation.
